When I think of Steampunk, I think of books and films, but Steampunk is so much more. It’s a sub-culture that allows creativity in many areas.
This is a collection of Steampunk shorts. The key to most of these is re-imagining and re-creating what might have been or what could have been. I like the creative, artistic aspect that goes along with Steampunk.
PBS Short: This is a nice overview of Steampunk and some of the movement’s diverse aspects. Don’t think the video is over when you see the PBS logo. Keep watching for “7 Great Things That Are Better Steampunk’d.”
Steampunk Museum in London. This is an exhibit I would have liked to see. From the video: Steampunk is “a celebration of the arts and sciences of the Victorian era turned into physical form. . . . is essentially based on all the sciences of the Victorian era.” Steampunk Art and Design is another site about the exhibit.
Steampunk Chicago: Click the link to check out their website. This is interesting because it shows how “found items” can be re-purposed, and how some Steampunk enthusiasts embrace this subculture as a way of life. Consumerism produces a throwaway mentality. Steampunk builds to last, a sensibility borrowed from the past.
Steampunk Costumes: This video makes me want to go out and make a costume and wear it for every day. These designers started when they were children. It’s great they were encouraged in their art.
Steampunk 101: Okay this one’s cheesy, a practical and amateurish video. Near the end, the narrator goes over Steampunk Slang. It’s fun. “Mind your gauges” or “Keep your goggles on” is Steampunk for “Chill out.”
Steampunk Music: Yeah, Steampunk has it’s own music. This is a long playlist, lots of variety and an excellent sampling. For the full list of songs, see YouTube. The first song by The Dolls of New Albion, the name Sir Francis Drake gave to the rocky coast north of San Francisco.
